When Owen Dias Jr. walks into a room one of the first questions asked is, “Do you play basketball?” Standing at 6’9” its an obvious question for most to ask to him, but the answer is a bit more complicated. Owen does not just play basketball, he lives it.
Owen has been involved in basketball since he was young. Born and raised in Ottawa to Jamaican Immigrant parents, one of the main activities in his neighborhood was playing basketball at the local Boys and Girls Club. Day in and day out, basketball was life. Owen hit a stroke of luck by growing a foot over the summer going into grade 10. His new height and his prior experience playing guard roles made him difficult to cover and helped him lead his team to four city championship games winning two also winning himself MVP honours the next three years. From high school, he continued onto his post-secondary career playing for the St Lawrence College (Kingston, ON) for 1 year before rejoining his High School coaches at Algonquin College (Ottawa, ON) for 3 years, bringing home the schools only OCAA championship in 2003.
Owen has been coaching basketball for over 15 years with experience at the elementary, high school and club level. 9 years ago Owen relocated to Calgary and became a coach and lead academy instructor for Calgary Youth Development Centre (CYDC). During his time at CYDC he has trained and mentored many athletes towards their goals of playing post secondary basketball in both Canada and the US. Always willing to give back to the community, Owen has provided free clinics to schools in lower income areas around Calgary and became a volunteer Head Coach for Holy Cross Senior Boys basketball team where they won a city Championship in 2018.
As the game of basketball continued to grow in Canada, Owen saw a need for more specialized one on one and group training for athletes wanting to increase their skills, confidence and basketball IQ. Wanting to share his playing and coaching experience, Impact Basketball Training (IBT) was created to address the specific needs of each player and to help make them successful both physically and mentally on the court. The skills learned through basketball are transferable to other facets of life and IBT strives to develop the person not just the player.
